Volunteering.
Volunteer with sea turtles on the south Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
As a small community-led organization, we depend on volunteers collaborating with the project year-round in order to successfully carry out all of our conservation, research and community activities. We are still a relatively new project that requires self-motivated and innovative individuals that are looking to make a real impact on a grass-roots project in rural Costa Rica. You must be happy to live in basic conditions, work during unsociable hours (early mornings and late nights are where all the action is!!) and in adverse weather conditions (we patrol the beaches rain or shine!). We are also working towards a sustainable living situation, therefore we eat a mostly vegetarian/vegan diet while on the project and try to minimize use of plastics, chemicals and other environmentally damaging or unethical products. This is a great challenge and life changing experience for all volunteers, and you do not need previous experience relating to conservation to be able to participate.
REQUIREMENTS
Volunteers do not require any previous experience in sea turtle conservation, however it definitely helps to have an strong interest in wildlife, outdoor living, conservation and sustainability. Volunteers should have:
-
Good physical fitness
-
Positive mental attitude and good work ethic
-
Ability to work well with others and listen to instructions
-
Good communication in either English or Spanish
-
Personal medical insurance
-
Be 18yrs and over
ACTIVITIES
As a volunteer, you will participate in daily turtle patrols, morning patrols (3-5 hrs) or night patrols (4-7 hrs). On the patrols you will protect new nests, record data on the nesting females, excavate hatched nests, assist with tourist experiences and release hatchlings! During the day, we will also have beach clean-ups, plastic upcycling, community workshops/English lessons, presentations, gardening and general camp maintenance!
COSTS
The weekly contribution for volunteers is $250 per week with a TWO week minimum. This amount covers all your food and accommodation in a mixed dormitory space, as well as all project training and participation in activities.
Volunteers must cover their transportation costs to reach and leave COPROT, and any extra activities that they want to do during their free time.
