1. Do I need previous conservation experience?
No! You don't need previous experience to volunteer with COPROT. Our team will provide training and guidance for all project activities. What matters most is that you are willing to learn, work as part of a team and get involved.
2. What will I do as a volunteer?
Activities vary depending on the season and the needs of the project, but may include sea turtle beach patrols, hatchery work, nest monitoring, data collection, beach cleaning, gardening, maintenance and community activities. Your schedule will vary depending on turtle activity and the needs of the project.
3. What are the working hours?
Our schedules are flexible because our work depends on turtle activity, weather and community activities. During turtle season, patrols take place at night and early in the morning, often from around 8pm–2am and 5am–8am. Your schedule will always include time for rest, and volunteers receive at least one full day off each week.
4. Do I need to speak Spanish?
No. Our camps are bilingual and important information will be communicated in English. However, Spanish is a big part of everyday life and our work with local communities, so even knowing a few basic phrases will be helpful. It's also a great opportunity to practise your Spanish!
5. What is the accommodation like?
Our camps offer simple, rustic accommodation in open-air dormitories with mosquito nets, shared bathrooms and showers, communal kitchens and common areas. We are located in the jungle, so expect a basic, nature-focused experience rather than hotel-style accommodation.
6. Is there Wi-Fi and electricity?
Both camps have Wi-Fi and solar power, although neither can be guaranteed at all times. Electricity may be limited during periods of poor weather or technical issues, so we recommend bringing a power bank. If you would like mobile data, Kölbi is the only network that reliably works in our area.
7. What is the food like?
We provide basic, nutritious meals at camp, with food being predominantly vegetarian. Volunteers help with meal preparation and keeping the communal kitchen clean. If you have specific dietary requirements, please let us know before your arrival so we can discuss what is possible.
8. How do I get to the camp?
Volunteers are responsible for making their own way to Puerto Jiménez, where our team can help coordinate your transfer to camp. The camps are remote and the journey can take up to two hours, depending on the camp and road conditions. We will provide detailed arrival information once your placement is confirmed.
9. Can I swim or visit the beach?
Both camps are very close to beautiful Pacific beaches, but the beaches directly in front of our camps are not safe for swimming because of strong currents. There are safer swimming beaches in the surrounding area that you can visit during your free time. Any trips outside the project are at your own expense.
10. What is included in my volunteer fee?
Your volunteer fee supports the running of our conservation program and includes your accommodation, meals and participation in the project activities. Transport to and from Puerto Jiménez, personal expenses, travel insurance and activities outside the project are not included. Your contribution directly helps us continue our sea turtle conservation and community work.
